Farewell To Blob's Park
by: Joseph E. Early
The doors are now closed
the dancing has ended
Lasting memories remain
of those we've befriended.
The building, though standing
shall remain quiet and dark
While thousands of people
bid farewell to Blob's Park.
We acknowledge the legacy
Max gave to us all
And the years of great pleasure
Enjoyed in this hall
We'll remember the family
that toiled everyday
To help make our visit
a most enjoyable stay.
The many bands that appeared
shall play here no more
Though their music resounds
over a different dance floor.
We'll miss the buffets
that gave us the strength
To complete a fast polka
whatever it's length.
The Spice of Life functions
were quite entertaining
And the holiday festivities
are memories remaining.
The memories are endless
though a void shall prevail
And Blob's will be remembered
In every detail.
As we leave here tonight
one thing is for certain
We have all lost a friend
by Blob's Parks final curtain.
An authentic Bavarian Biergarten conveniently located between Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. featured homecooked German style foods and over seventy brands of beer, including German beers on draught. It was open every weekend with live Polka bands and dancing on a 2,000 square foot wooden dance floor. It was one of Maryland's favorite polka dance halls enjoyed by locals and out-of-towners as well.

In 1933 Max Blob, wanting to have a gathering place for his friends from the old country, built a small frame building on his farm in Jessup, MD. It housed a bowling alley and a few tables. It became so popular that he opened it to the public as a German beer garden with dancing every weekend. The building was periodically enlarged.
In 1942 John and Katherine Eggerl, Max's niece, began helping him manage the business. As their children and grandchildren came along, they also became a working part of the establishment.
On February 22, 1958 the hall was completely gutted by fire, but within a month it was restored and re-opened to become more successful than ever. In recent years it became apparent that in order to accommodate the crowds, a new building would have to be built. This dream became a reality on June 25, 1976 when the all new Blob's Park opened it's doors.
The entire family hopes that you have enjoyed your visits to Blob's Park and will have memories to last a lifetime.
